Sandwood Bay

A truly wild sandy beach with turquoise waters and great views nested away from inhabited areas. A real contender for the best beach in UK.

Sandwood Bay is a wild man’s (or woman’s) dream and will most appeal to those who are no strangers to spending time outdoors. It’s beautifully remote with the nearest parking area about 4 miles away which in other words is about an hour and a half walk from the car park. The beach is big and even on the busier days there is enough space for everyone without feeling crowded.

Views over impressive sea stack of Am Buachaille and hills in the distance are excellent. The water is beautifully turquoise and the sand of the beach is brightly coloured and smooth. Located behind the bay’s large sand dunes is the beautiful freshwater Sandwood Loch. We recommend taking midge repellent with you when visiting this beach as on some warmer days you are likely to encounter midges. You can learn more about midges and how to avoid being on their menu here.

This beach is considered to be one of the cleanest unspoilt beaches in the whole of mainland Britain. Sandwood Bay is part of the Sandwood Estate which is run and regularly maintained by the John Muir Trust. We kindly recommend supporting their efforts of keeping this beach clean by leaving a donation in the donation box which you can find in the car park.

Accessibility

Located on the far north-west coast of Scotlands mainland and a 4-mile hike from the car park to get to Sandwood Bay beach makes access challenging. Luckily the paths from the beach car park are well maintained and even.

Wow factor

The unspoiled Sandwood Bay beach has amazing sea views and beautiful waters. The feeling of remoteness just adds to the wow factor.

Cleanliness

Sandwood Bay beach is very clean mostly thanks to the remote location and John Muir Trust that maintains it.

Facilities

This is as remote and wild as it gets, no facilities here, no toilets, no wi-fi, just all-natural.
