Dubs Hut

Nestled in the Fleetwith Pike slate mines 1,600ft high in the mountains is the Dubs Hut bothy which features a good-sized sleeping platform and woodburning stove. This shelter is a great alternative to camping in a tent on stormy nights or if the smaller nearby Warnscale bothy is occupied.

Dubs Hut is a former miners hut that was used by people who used to work in the nearby mines. It is conveniently located close to the popular Haystacks, Innominate Tarn, and Honister Pass car park. This area has many beautiful trails that a lot of us come back to visit again and again. It’s great to have a good-sized bothy in the area if the weather turns for worse and you need shelter for the night.

Features

Dubs Hut has been made entirely out of slate stones and features one large room with a stone floor and a sleeping platform to accommodate 3 people comfortably. There are stone stools around the sides of the bothy, a table and chairs. Outside conveniently there is drinking water available that comes from the nearby springs. There is no toilet at this bothy as not many bothies have this luxury. You should walk at least a couple of hundred metres from the bothy and 60 metres from the water supply before excavations and evacuations commence to comply with the MBA rules.

Location

A great location with fantastic views over the mountains and popular trails right at the doorstep.

Size

The bothy has one large room which accommodates 3 people comfortably on the sleeping platform (more if don’t mind cuddles) and a generous space around the platform for extra sleeping space if necessary.

On one of our visits in bad and stormy weather, we arrived at this bothy after finding Warnscale bothy occupied. Despite finding at least 6 other people there already, we were welcomed in and easily were able to find a sleeping space as well as room for our gear.

Comfort

Since the renovation works Dubs Hut bothy is a much more comfortable place to stay at than before the leaking roof, sleeping platform and fire stove was installed. Now this is a popular camping destination and it’s very likely there will be other people sharing this shelter with you. The bothy is warm and cosy when more people are occupying it, but can be a bit chilly for a couple on frostier nights.

Accessibility

There are very popular and well-established hiking trails right next to the bothy and it’s not far away from two nearby car parks.
