Dulyn

One of the most remote Welsh bothies, Dulyn bothy is a true gem hidden in Snowdonia mountains. This former shepherds hut has a fantastic location with amazing views and bothy itself is well maintained by the MBA.

While being one of the most remote bothies in Wales, it is also one of the more easily accessible, if you travel by car. The narrow and twisty country lanes will take you to Carnedd Llewelyn car park, where you can find a few great trails. There are several ways to go to the Dulyn bothy, but the most popular route is a 6-mile circular walk. This route will take you past two lakes and historical ruins. Llyn Dulyn (Black Lake) is a natural 60-meter deep lake short walk away from the bothy. Dulyn bothy is set in the valley surrounded by mountains right next to Afon Dulyn river. Here you can find great hiking trails and the bothy is a perfect base when exploring this area.

As you enter the bothy there is a front porch that will lead you into the main room with a stove in it. The bothy has a wooden floor and a wooden bunk bed in the other room. It’s a really peaceful location and every now and then there will be either a sheep or a wild ponies grazing at the front of the bothy.

Features

There is an efficient multi-fuel stove and a spacious bunk bed for sleeping. Also, you will find some comfy chairs and tables providing plenty of space for you and your gear. There is an axe and a saw should you need it for your firewood.

There is no toilet at this bothy as not many bothies have this luxury. You should walk at least a couple of hundred metres from the bothy and 60 metres from the water supply before excavations and evacuations commence to comply with the MBA rules.

Location

A fantastic remote location which offers ample of Snowdonian charm. A great opportunity to explore nearby mountain peaks, go wild swimming in the chilly Llyn Dulyn or just do a quick circular hike with a brief stop at the bothy.

Size

A beautiful and large stone-built bothy with two rooms – a sitting room and sleeping space in a separate room. Sleeping space in the bunk beds is up to 6, but there’s also a large sleeping area on the wooden floor.

Comfort

It is exceptionally well isolated and inside the bothy it is very quiet. It also feels more homely than many other bothies, more like a home away from home rather than a shelter.

Accessibility

Despite being a very remote bothy it’s easily accessible from the car park. You will need to make your way through 3 farm gates on your way to the Carnedd Llewelyn car park and close them behind you. From the car park walking most direct route, it’s about an hour hike from the car. Please bear in mind that some parts of the path can become very boggy and you need good footwear to stay dry.
