Cae Amos

A 200-year-old former farmhouse and climbing hut in Snowdonia mountains offering good sized accommodation for hikers looking for shelter. Featuring a flashing toilet, kitchen worktops, multi-fuel stove, and a couple of bedrooms it is one of the best equipped bothies in the UK.

Cae Amos bothy is a two-storey traditional slate roof Snowdonia farmhouse with adjacent barns. It’s situated in an open area with distant views and boggy land around it. The large building can accommodate a big number of hikers in comfort while maintaining the feel of remoteness and being one with the nature.

Features

Unusual for a bothy is to have a toilet that flush and to have a proper kitchen area with running tap water. This was an unexpected, but very pleasant discovery to us. Opposite the kitchen, you will find a good-sized sitting room with a multi-fuel stove in it, tables, and chairs. On the first floor, there are two rooms with military beds in them that make it for a much more comfortable sleep without the need for a sleeping matt.

Location

Situated in the lower western part of Snowdonia National Park the location doesn’t offer dramatic views over mountain peaks or views over big lakes. However, it’s a great location for exploring wast fells of the western part of Snowdonia without the need for camping in a tent. The wild landscape near bothy has many historic secrets and exploring it will reveal many hidden ruins. Even more, Cae Amos bothy is the perfect base for exploring summits of the nearby hills.

Size

This is as big as bothy gets with 10 or more sleeping spaces in the upper level and additional in the sitting room.

Comfort

Unless you’re unlucky sharing bothy with noisy snorers or barking dogs (like us), you should find the stay very comfortable. The sitting room is spacious but not too big making it easier to keep it warm. The kitchen area with running water helps a lot when cleaning your pots after a hearty dinner. And having a proper toilet is a luxury we never experienced in any other bothy.

Accessibility

The usual access to the bothy is from Garn Dolbenmaen or Cwm Pennant via boggy paths. Cwm Pennant has limited roadside parking while Garn Dolbenmaen has plenty of parking, but is a longer walk.
